6-C THE GALVESTON DAILY NEWS WEDNESDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 25, 1991 Entertainment and features Don't hesitate to help someone in need By ABIGAIL VAN BUREN DEAR ABBY: Concerning peo- who are hooked on drugs alcohol, I just read a letter in the San Diego Union from the woman who signed herself, "Broke Cycle in Dallas." I agree with the writer wholeheartedly, and your response as well. However, I would like to go one step further: Family members CAN help who doesn't want help" someone who is in denial. Denial, and that "false sense of control" we call delusional thinking, creates havoc in relationships. However, this denial can be broken through with a process called Intervention. I recommend Intervention to anyone who is frustrated by anoth- person's drinking or using.

You don't have to wait for someone to "hit bottom," which could ultimately be death. 1 am a professional counselor at The McDonald Center for Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Treatment at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Calif. To learn more about Intervention, call a local treatment center or call our 24-hour Parent and Teen Helpline: 1-619-458-4357. JOHN C. SEAMAN, M.A.

DEAR MR. SEAMAN: Thanks for a potentially lifesaving letter for the thousands of people who are hooked on alcohol drugs but insist they can handle it which they cannot. DEAR ABBY: We have a daughter who is a senior in college. She was very popular in high school. She was homecoming queen, a cheerleadeaand an student.

In her second year of college, she started dating guys with long hair. None of them were druggies, but they were all long-hair types. We would have called them "hippies" in my day. Her latest boyfriend has a tattoo on his arm. Well, last week our daughter came home with an ugly tattoo of an eye on her ankle! Abby, we are decent people, but I feel as though our daughter has betrayed us and all our teachings and beliefs.

I know that tattoos are fashionable right now, but I am sure the day will come when she will be sorry and embarrassed about that tattoo on her ankle. I am humiliated and would like to know how much parents are supposed to take. -UNHAPPY DOWN SOUTH DEAR UNHAPPY: You are taking this too personally; keep in mind that the ankle with the tattoo is your daughter's, not yours. Your daughter sounds like a bright, responsible young woman. Don't worry about her tattoo.

Should she ever feel sorry and embarrassed, the tattoo can be covered with a cosmetic. Two of the best Cover mark or Dermablend can be found in most department stores and some pharmacies. This one's for everybody, from teens to seniors! To purchase Abby's new booklet, "The Anger in All of Us and How to Deal With It," send a long, business-size, self-addressed envelope, plus check or money order for $3.95 ($4.50 in Canada) to: Dear Abby, Anger Booklet, P.O. DONALD TRUMP is prepared to battle the Town Council over plans to subdivide his Mar-a-Lago estate and has a backup plan just in case.

Trump attorney Peter Broberg has applied under an obscure zoning ordinance to make the 17-acre estate a historical preservation- residential development. The estate could be divided into 10 lots for private homes, rather than the eight requested in People Trump's original, rejected subdivision plan. The millionaire developer would need a preservation strategy and approval from the council with recommendations from the Landmarks Preservation Commission and the Zoning Commission. The original plan was rejected by the landmarks panel in August, but Trump plans to appeal next month. THE ACES ON BRIDGE BOBBY WOLFF "There is no substitute for hard work." Thomas Edison. Today's South did his best to keep East off lead, but his best wasn't good enough. With a different lie of the cards, his plan would have worked. However, he failed to find the best line of play.

Declarer ducked the first club in dummy and won the second with dummy's ace. He drew trumps and led a diamond to dummy's ace to ruff a club. He led a second diamond toward dummy, and when West played the jack, he played low from dummy, hoping that West would hold the trick. No luck. East was wide awake, overtaking with his queen to switch to hearts, and the game fell one short.

South did well to duck the first club but did not go far enough. After East's club trey denied his ability to ruff a third round of clubs, South should have ducked the second club as well. On the club ace, South would then pitch a diamond, and after cashing the queen and jack of trumps, South would cash the two top diamonds. A diamond ruff with the ace would establish the suit, and a trump to dummy's king would finish the job. Two heart losers would go on the diamonds, and South would score a well-played game.

South would have made his game had West held the diamond queen, but that was no reason not to guard against finding that card with East.
