We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Parkash Singh Rawat as an IMPACT fellow starting May 15, 2024! Parkash is working under the guidance of Prof. Guy Nagels in the AIMS research group at the Center for Neurosciences, Vrije Universiteit Brussel.Parkash is dedicated to his project titled "Identification of hydrogen sulphide producing gut bacteria implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (GUT-MS-H2S)." This project aims to identify specific gut bacteria and their hydrogen sulphide (H2S)-producing enzymes, which are implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS). By characterizing these bacteria and their enzymes, and correlating increased gut H2S levels with a reduction in neuroprotectant butyrate production, this integrative study will provide prospective biomarkers and therapeutic targets for MS treatment and prevention.Parkash completed his Ph.D. at Shandong University in 2023, with a focus on gut microbiology, ecology, and enzymology. His research has been pivotal in advancing our understanding of gut bacteria, including large-scale functional screening, enzymatic gene analysis, and biochemical characterization of gut-derived polysaccharide lyases. He has extensive experience in genetics, enzymology, mRNA biology, bioinformatics, and metabolomics.Learn more about Parkash and his work here: https://lnkd.in/ehgHH9K8IMPACT programme managers: Philippe Westbroek, Alessandra Rossetti, Mimi Deprez, Cristina García Timermans, Marie Pfeiffer, and Mohammad BorounVrije Universiteit Brussel, VUB TechTransfer , ERIS@VUB-TechTransfer
