Cheapest petrol station near you as RAC issues warning over 'unfair' prices (2024)

Motorists may soon experience a change at the pumps due to a new law that could potentially save them money.

The UK Government has recently passed a new law, enabling them to monitor any irregularities in pricing at petrol and diesel stations. This comes after drivers have been faced with soaring fuel prices.

Given the current situation where the UK reportedly has the highest diesel prices in Europe and one of the highest petrol prices. The newly-introduced Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act could cut prices and prevent price gouging activities by high retailer margins on refuelling.

Currently, the average cost for a litre of petrol is 149p, while diesel is priced at 155p. Both prices significantly exceed the European averages. The RAC has written to Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho this week calling for “meaningful action” against fuel retailers charging too much for petrol and diesel.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “We feel the current margins being charged by larger retailers in particular are extremely unfair on drivers struggling to get by in the cost-of-living crisis." The RAC added that the new legislation is a "cause for hope for fairer fuel price"

According to the new legislation which came into effect on May 24, The Act will also give new powers to the CMA to closely monitor road fuel prices and report any sign of malpractice to the government. This might indicate a reduction in prices once the law is fully operational, suggesting that it might be worthwhile to wait before filling up to check if prices do indeed plummet.
