If you’ve ever been the safety rep on the scene of a job site where a significant injury or fatality has occurred, you know that experience can be pretty traumatic. Witnessing the event and its aftermath is a difficult experience in its own right. The safety rep is also generally the first to jump in and help stabilize the scene, perhaps initiate or coordinate emergency responses, and then manage the immediate investigation to mitigate future, exposures and prevent reoccurrence. The dramatic changes we saw in the workplace during Covid also played the large part in contributing to increased stress loads for HS professionals. We spend a lot of time coordinating care, and working really hard to keep other people, our employees, and by extension their families, safe.But we don’t often take the time to step back and care about ourselves.
